Hersonissos Crete

Explore the Enchanting History

On the western edge of the Gulf of Malia, in an area of unique natural beauty that combines the magic of the sea with the grandeur of the towering Lasithi mountains, lies Hersonissos. It is one of the oldest settlements in Crete, serving as the seat of the present-day homonymous Municipality. The name “Hersonissos” is derived from the small strip of land (hersoneso) that closes off the western edge of the Gulf of Malia. The city’s history dates back to the Minoan era (around 1500 BC), with evidence found in excavations at the beach location of Anissaras. In ancient inscriptions, the city is identified by various spellings, such as Hersónasos, Herrónasos, Herrónisos, Hersónisos. To distinguish it from many other cities with the same name in the Greek world, it is usually referred to as “Herronisos according to Crete.” Hersonissos emerges as a destination that blends history with modern comfort, offering a panoramic experience with stunning beaches, traditional restaurants, and lively streets. The tranquility of the sea meets the vibrancy of culture, creating a space that invites visitors to discover the magic of Crete.
